The leaves are changing colors, and pumpkins are on full display. That can only mean one thing—fall is here! Maybe you are in the process of planning your next RV trip, or you’re already packing. So, what better time to go over some RV tips for the fall and winter seasons, than now?

Traveling in the winter and fall
Check the Weather Ahead of Time
The most important step of a RV during the winter or fall is getting familiar with the climate of your travel destination. Climates can greatly vary from one town to another and, in some cases, in one town to the next. Do some Google searches, looking at average temperatures and average precipitation. In some destinations, you’ll find that travelling in the fall or winter is relatively the same as spring and summer.
However, in many destinations, especially farther north. You will need quite a bit more preparation for the cold temperatures and snowfall you’ll likely encounter. It is also important to note that the weather can change on a whim, so take that into account and don’t just rely on weather forecasts alone.
Packing Clothes and Tools
Once you have a good understanding of the weather, pack your clothes accordingly. Make sure you have light layers like thin cotton t-shirts and long sleeves. Then, add thicker layers like flannels and sweatshirts. Gloves, hats, and thick socks can be lifesavers as well. Last but certainly not least, don’t forget your thick winter coat. If you are going to an area with extremely cold temperatures, invest in a good quality heavy coat and possibly coveralls as well.

The right attire is so important!
Clothes are not the only thing you need to pack. You also need tools to brave the winter as well.
Experts at The Dyrt Magazine recommend the following:
- Insulated window covers
- A safe space heater
- Snatch straps
- Shovel
- Shackles
- Tire chains
- Traction boards
- Hairdryer (to unfreeze frozen pipes)
- Windshield washer fluid rated to -40F
- Push broom (to get snow off your roof)
Winterizing Your RV
There is nothing worse than waking up to frozen pipes or an engine that won’t start. The KOA recommends several steps you can take to prevent these mishaps and prepare for RV travel during the fall and winter.
- Properly insulate your RV. This will keep the frigid air out and ensure you stay warm.
- Seal your windows and doors. This will also keep you warm and cozy.
- Wrap your plumbing in heat tape to prevent frozen and cracked pipes.
- Have your engine serviced. Cold temperatures put more stress on your engine and battery, so it is important that both are in top working condition.
Safe Driving
Road conditions can be hazardous in the winter, so make sure you are aware of where you are going and what the conditions look like. An expert at RV Life Magazine says to carry enough food and water in case you break down. He also notes that it is vital to follow the “3 O’s” when driving on wintery or slick roads.
-
- Don’t overpower
- Don’t Overbreak
- Don’t Oversteer
